ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD), and Asperger’s Syndrome are challenged to understand social cues and body language and to then respond appropriately. They may be unable to stay focused enough to enjoy ordinary pleasures, such as dining out, museums and other family outings or peer oriented social occasions. Children with ADD, ADHD, NLD or Asperger's are frequently corrected, criticized, and seldom praised. Their behaviors can target them for bullying and disrespect. Because these children are of normal or above average intelligence, academic progress is not usually a problem, but their compromised social performance can result in poor self-esteem. Problems associated with such lowered self-image include negative peer associations, dangerous behaviors, and bad choices.

Cedars Academy is a licensed Residential Child Care Facility and Day Treatment Program by the State of Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families.
Cedars Academy is accredited by CITA (Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation).
It is the vision of Cedars Academy to teach students to internalize knowledge and responses to social situations in positive, appropriate, and adaptive ways. These behaviors may seem obvious to others, but students with these disorders require consistent positive reinforcement in order to learn these skills.
For example, shaking hands is a complex behavior requiring the adherence to an algorithm of pressure, proximity, and duration of time, among other elements. Children having the neurological configuration of our students benefit from having these steps articulated and practiced. Similarly, the process of befriending is a bewildering set of behaviors under any circumstances.
Our practical and consistent method of skill building instills confidence and competence as they gain these crucial tools for success. Each student’s needs are addressed specifically, personally and collaboratively. Our team of caring professional educators, house parents, and administrators share a goal: to nurture the success of all our students.
