FAMILY INVOLVEMENT AT CEDARS ACADEMY
Cedars Academy is a place where your child can succeed and be appreciated in a homelike atmosphere. We are not just a specialty boarding school for students with diverse neurological conditions (ADD, ADHD, NLD, Asperger's), but also a nurturing setting where children can grow as unique individuals and accomplished learners. When our students graduate, they take with them the skills they have learned at Cedars Academy to thrive in college and to succeed in life. Our students bloom, make life-long friendships, and become active engaged members of a closely-knit community, which includes structure, social skills enhancement, academic challenge, and lots of fun.
Our classes are designed with frequent breaks and more hands-on learning opportunities to engage even the most reluctant student. We accommodate each student’s unique learning style. Regular exercise supports the physical aspects of a growing adolescent and is provided frequently. A daily predictable schedule with specific times for homework, chores, meals, and play help our students remain focused and happy.
While Cedars is a great home away from home, we emphatically believe that our students need the love and support of family members. Parents must actively participate in their child’s educational experience. When students go home during school breaks, they use that time to practice what they have learned at Cedars without our direct support. It’s necessary for parents to promote their child’s new skills and tools. During school breaks, parents are asked to fill out a progress report for their child. Parents monitor and document their child’s behavior and return the report to the school with their child. This information influences the student’s position on the Leadership Pyramid.
Parents also stay involved and informed in their child’s life and education at Cedars through telephone calls and letters from their child. In addition, parents will receive telephone and email contact from their child’s advisor and therapist. At Cedars, we are accessible and responsive to parent concerns. Parents may request a conference at any time, report cards are issued four times per school year, and progress reports are sent every month. Progress reports contain detailed information on academic performance, behavioral, and social interaction that are prepared by those staff members who work most closely with your child. We hold three parent weekends per school year on the Cedars Academy campus. Another innovative way parents are encouraged to use in order to stay connected to their child is through Parent Check-In.
