CEDARS+™
For students who have graduated from high school and are ready to progress academically, but may still need some time cementing the positive gains they have achieved at Cedars or in another setting, we provide an individualized post-secondary curriculum. We believe in encouraging our students’ continued growth, while providing them a gentle transition from secondary school to college dorm life. Cedars+™ integrates graduated students, ages 18 and older, into the academic and social experience of Delaware Technical Community College. While our older students continue to live in the structured and nurturing environment of the Cedars Academy community they learn to be more independent. Delaware Technical Community College is just 9 miles away and offers 2-year and 4-year degree programs.
They can also enroll at Sussex Tech or Polytech Career and Technical Schools where they can learn a trade. Students can take drivers education or SAT preparation to assist them with independence and college placement. Our Certified Guidance Counselor works with the students and their families in obtaining accommodations for college testing and classroom assistance.
Cedars+™ has partnered with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services to offer the School to Work Program. This program assists students with disabilities to obtain and maintain job placement. Cedars+™ works with students on career interests, their strengths and interviewing techniques and how to complete a resume. The School to Work Program continues working with these students where they still have challenges to overcome to be ready for employment. Students are provided transportation through Cedars+™, to get to college, work or vocational school.
Cedars+™ is also working with our students in the transition to adulthood. We have a Life Skills curriculum tailored for each individuals needs. First we assess their needs and add our goals to their service plan. Our service plan is a treatment plan that has goals and objectives that are reviewed by a licensed therapist, the student and their family on a regular basis. The plan covers their mental and physical health, education and career goals and family and social objectives. We have a full-time licensed therapist/certified guidance counselor at Cedars+™, along with our house parents who are trained Life Coaches. There are ongoing Mandatory staff trainings for all staff throughout the year.
On a daily basis the staff at Cedars+™ oversees and or assists students with their Daily chores, planning menus and cooking for themselves, hygiene and homework Assignments. Students learn how to open and manage their checking or savings Accounts when they are ready. They also have choices of social activities or Hobbies they can participate in and encouraged to try new things. Staff also assists students with time management skills and documenting priority things to accomplish in their daily planners. For their physical health we have a local gym near by that has many different classes they can chose from or just use the equipment that is available.
